Oops! On Outlining

So that didn't work.

Remember how I said I might have dived into my next project too quickly?
Spoiler alert.  I did.

BUT! It resulted in my making this pretty mock up / temporary book cover for my current WIP: COLD BURN.

October has thus far been a month of slowing down in order to do things right.

I switched gears early this month and decided to expand my outline before racing through a draft. I am presently elbow deep in notepads, writing craft books, and pens. Outlining has always worked better for me on paper.

On the recommendation of a Genius Writer friend I decided to take the rest of October to work through John Truby's Anatomy of Story to develop a better outline.

Truby's tone is a little arrogant for my taste (disregarding Aristotle's Poetics with a hand-wave was laughable), but the writing exercises are worthwhile.
I've worked through most of the chapters. My bullet journal is filled with notes on character motivation, variations on a thematic question, choreography for fight scenes. Developing the story has been cleaner and more intuitive than my previous attempts (I mentioned it took me about 5 years to plot/ write Winded Embers, right?). I am quite satisfied with the process.

I'm taking the last week of October to work through the chapter on plot, which is the final chapter I intend to work through (though not the last chapter in the book).

When all is finished, it should leave me prepped with an outline just in time for November 1st.

And y'all know what November is!

I have participated in NaNoWriMo and Camp NaNoWriMo before. I even won a couple times.
However, this year will be a new experience for me as I will be writing a brand new first draft of a brand new book. The goal is to write a 50,000 word story in 30 days.  I know I can produce words that fast, I don't know if I can make them into a story that quickly.

For context:
Cold Burn Target word count: 50,000+ words
Deadline:  1 month.

Winded Embers came in at just under 60,000 words.
I wrote it in: ~ 1 YEAR.

If you want to write a book in a month like a crazy person come join me and participate in NaNoWriMo. (My username is  AmesCandor add me as a buddy!)  Add your NaNo username in the comments so we can be writer buddies!

See you all next month!
